Contact-lens-related corneal ulcer caused by klebsiella pneumoniae

چکیده
The use of contact lenses (CLs) has been widely associated with corneal alterations that range in symptomatology and severity. Lesions may vary from small peripheral sterile infiltrates to infectious central ulcers with sight-threatening potential. Contact lens wear has been described as the most important predisposing factor to microbial keratitis worldwide. Infections are more frequent in soft-lens users, and the risk with gas-permeable rigid lenses is estimated to be onethird of that with daily-wear soft lenses. Extended wear is also associated with a higher risk of microbial keratitis. Bacterial keratitis is most commonly caused by aggressive gram-negative Pseudomonas spp.; Klebsiella spp. is rarely the causative agent of keratitis due to contact lens wear. We present a case of contact-lens-related bacterial keratitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Corneal ulcers are a major cause of blindness worldwide. A recent eye health care concern is the increasing incidence of contact lens induced corneal ulcers. Delay in the diagnosis and management of corneal ulcers can cause severe visual loss, therefore an early ophthalmologist visit and timely administration of antimicrobial agents can prevent visual loss. Factors associated with increased ris...

The use of hydrophilic contact lenses has recently been recommended in a variety of pathological conditions. The results have so far been encouraging, but large series with reports of complications as well as of success rates have not yet appeared. The following case represents an instance of corneal abscess caused by a usually nonpathogenic organism in association with the use of a soft contac...
